I'm bringing back Obscure Kaiju to as a semi-regular feature. Because it's fun, people love reading these, there's A LOT of giant monsters for me to share, AND...
...I sort of suck at my job as group-administrator here. And I apologize for not being better at my position. If you have have personal gripes and seek retribution from me, contact me up the difference.
Also, any other Obscure Kaiju entries I do throughout May, will largely be focused on the works of Ib Melchior, due to the May art jam based on the man. And how I underestimated the obscurity the man's monstrous creations, beyond "Reptilicus"
Obscure Kaiju: Rokmutul and Pterodactyl
For the 2015 return of Obscure Kaiju, let me introduce to you a recently re-discovered monster from Legendary Pictures' "Godzilla", along with its previously unknown, winged compatriot.
Rokmutul is a six-legged, reptilian quadrupedal beast, that was considered for the 2014 film, early in its pre-production years prior. Roughly around 2011 and on-wards, until Rokmutul was ultimately replaced by the MUTO.
Rokmutul isn't really all that new, as its been featured in several articles surrounding the film's concept art, since early 2014. Including the deviantART page of concept artist Frank Hong, with Rokmutul being often referred to as '6-Legged Anguirus Stand-In' within said postings.
Rokmutul has largely been ignored by almost every Kaiju Fan until recently, when it was finally given a name and more artwork, featured on the official portfolio of Josh Nizzi - another concept artists for the 2014 "Godzilla"
It was also on Mister Nizzi's site, that another abandoned Legendary Kaiju was revealed, simply named Pterodactyl.
No idea of this unimaginatively named monster's role in the 2014 film's early pre-production. But I have the feeling its role would have been similar to the Winged MUTO. That, or a lesser, secondary creature threat, akin to the Babyzillas and the Space Gyaos.

KMAC for May 2015: Ib MelchiorOn April 15th, 2015, science fiction and film writer Ib Melchior passed away.
Mister Melchior has contributed significant entries to both cult cinema and the giant monster genre, as he was the man behind the screenplays for ”Angry Red Planet” (1959, also director), ”Reptilicus” (1961), ”Journey to the Seventh Planet” (1962), ”Robinson Crusoe on Mars” (1964), ”Planet of the Vampires” (1965), and many other films and short stories.
His brief action-horror prose, ”The Racer”, would become the basis for the wonderfully mean-spirited sci-fi satire ”Death Race 2000” (1975).
And Ib Melchior was also the writer for the abandoned American version of ”Godzilla Raids Again”, ”The Volcano Monsters” around 1957.

Wikizilla posted a video about everyone's favorite subterranean sea beetle god, Megalon! Seriously, WHEN is Megalon returning to the big screen? Gigan got a comeback, complete with H.R. Geiger influenced redesign, so why not his drill beetle buddy as well? Legendary, Toho, one of you make this happen already.

Happy Birthday to Akira Takarada
Today is the birthday of classic Toho leading man, Akira Takarada! He's a familiar face to all of us kaiju fans who've grown up watching Godzilla movies from the Showa era all the way through to the Heisei and Millennium eras (plus that scene they cut out from Godzilla 2014 lol), and who've been lucky enough to meet him in person at conventions around the world. He's given us so many happy memories and as someone who's met him in real life, seems like a very friendly man overall, so I wish him a very happy 86th birthday, and many more!

While the series isn't wall-to-the-wall monster action, its definitely a lot of fun and, as my friend KaijuDuke has noted, one can appreciate it a lot more now as an adult than as a teenager with a working man's perspective but it's still bright and upbeat enough for children to get into - worth seeing for both the mecha vs monster action and, of course, the slic
