In Kaijuden, we strive to have the most complete gallery of giant monster-related art on all of deviantART. However, we are also a community to interact with, and to show our appreciation for the support and participation of our members we are giving back to the community with the Kaijuden Monthly Art Challenge. Every month a new monster, and prizes are guaranteed. Show your support with your participation in this monthly event, and we'll have the drive to conduct even grander events in the future.

***************

Introduction to this month's subject:

Although the 1960's was the Golden Age for Japanese monster movies (or Kaiju Eiga), 1967 itself was a landmark year, which saw many notable films and television series come out from multiple studios. "King Kong Escapes", "Son of Godzilla", "Gamera vs. Gyaos", "The X From Outer Space", "Ultra Seven", "Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot", and the South Korean co-production "Yongary, Monster from the Deep" are among the best known, and all of which featured iconic monsters who would return time and again to this very day in both sequels, remakes and spin-offs.

Also coming out from this year was "Gappa the Giant Monster", which is the most obscure of these entries despite its own notoriety. Better known in America as "The Monster from the Prehistoric Planet" and "Gappa The Triphibian Monster", the story concerns a newly hatch reptilian bird beast of the title, being discovered on a South Sea's island by Japanese explorers. And soon thereafter brought back to the homeland for public exhibition for a Japanese pop magazine publisher. But Baby Gappa's far larger mother and father discovers the kidnapping, and head straight for Japan in a destructive search for their captive child.

We felt the Gappa Family was the perfect character subject for our first Kaijuden Monthly Art Challenge; the characters are well-known enough, yet lack any true fan art almost anywhere online; the family aspect opens the door for all sorts of illustration ideas and possibilities; and the Gryphon-like dragon appearance of these monsters would be very appealing for artists regardless if their Godzilla fans or not...you just have to love drawing monsters period.

Also, please keep in mind that you don't have to draw the whole trio; Mr. Gappa on his own is absolutely acceptable, and so on with Mrs. Gappa and Baby. And of course, every month we will have pages showcasing plenty of visual references for our artists, courtesy web-master Mario from the site Bestiaire Du Club Des Monstres. Some Rules To Go Over:

1-Artwork must be original and new, or at least has never been posted online before. And please no altered screen captures and similar images that are clearly not of your own doing.

2-Illustrations will be chosen based on skill and how well they capture the spirit and personality of the month's subject, so it's probably best to give your pictures your best efforts, like being fully colored or at least with strong black-and-white inks. Clay sculptures are also allowed.

3-You are more than welcome to do a re-design of the Gappa monsters, as long as its obvious who the characters are, and that their still the Gappa Family - No robot clones, brand new fourth member of the family, or completely original characters with distant / vague connections to the originals.

4-Despite that last rule, you are more than allowed to have one-or-more monsters / characters fighting and / or interacting with the Gappas, just as long as the main subject is the prominent entity and isn't overshadowed by the additional others. You can have your own original character in battle the Gappa, but not if your original guy is holding the severed heads of them, or similar disrespecting gags that undermine the main focus.

5-No extreme violence, nudity, or gore...we don't mind a darker, or more nightmarish take on the Gappa, just as long as its in some good taste. If you want to do a Kaiju Girl (sexy anthropomorphic) version of Mrs. Gappa, you can, but it would be better for groups like Daikaiju Academy (see link) and thus will have little merit to our monthly art jams. And please, no nipples or other overt sexually crudeness / pornography...again, in good taste.

Get all of your submissions done before June 27th, as that gives us enough time to chose our first and second place winners, as well as a short list of honorable mentions and favorites.

We hope to have a Contest Gallery set up, but until than, submit all Gappa art to the Other Kaiju From  Media gallery / sub-folder for now.

First place will get a single character illustration of their choice, done by :iconpyrasterran:

Second place also gets a single character illustration of their choice, done by :iconenshohma:

If your late with submissions, you are totally welcomed to still post them here at Kaijuden, as long as you realize they probably won't get any fan fare (unless their really good, then we put them into our prestigious Featured Gallery).

We look forward to what you guys come up with, and good luck!
